Most refractive error such as myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, & presbyopia can be easily corrected with eye glasses or contact lenses. Eye glasses or contact lenses are the most common methods of correcting refractive errors.
What are refractive errors?
A refractive error means that due to the shape of your eye, your eye doesn't refract the light properly, so the image you see is blurred. Although refractive errors are called eye disorders, they are not diseases.
Cataracts & Presbyopia
As you age the lens of the eye changes, after the age of 40, the lens becomes more rigid, the lens can't change shape as easily as it once did. It is more difficult to read at close range. This normal condition is called presbyopia.
When the natural lens of the eye becomes too rigid, and can't change shape anymore, a cataract starts to form. A cataract is a clouding of the eye's naturally clear lens. When the lens becomes cloudy, light rays cannot pass though it easily and vision is blurred. Cataract development is a normal aging process. Unfortunately cataracts cannot be prevented, or treated with medication. The only way to treat a cataract is to remove the natural cloudy lens and replace it with an artificial lens.
Glaucoma
Glaucoma develops when increased pressure within the eye detrimentally affects the optic nerve leading to blindness over time if untreated. If you have glaucoma your best hope of care depends on treatment from an experienced doctor who can measure the pressure in your eyes and observe subtle changes during an exam.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration comes naturally with age and affects your central vision. Several treatments are available that delay the associated vision loss; these include vitamins, laser treatment, and intraocular injections of medication.
